I'm sure many of you have heard this joke, or some variation of it: What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend? Homeless.
Funny, but true? In my investigation of the term "couch surfing", I actually came up with this definition: A skilled professional sport; most often taken up by the homeless musician.
Let's face the facts - being a touring Canadian musician isn't the most lucrative of careers (especially in the early "pre-crib" years). In fact, know a number of artists who survive without a fixed address. Why bother paying rent when you're only in town for a week or two here and there?
Being a professional musician often means couch surfing even when you HAVE a permanent address. Artists need places to sleep for the night after the show - those who open their doors are a godsend. Some of them even feed you breakfast in the morning!!
