First off, unless he's not here, MikeV is in charge of the blog today. For my Album of the Week, I'm pleased to shine a bright light on one of the most accomplished and captivating records of this young year. Out yesterday, it's called Montebello and it's by Montreal's Katie Moore, a powerful and distinctive voice in folk music that I think you'll appreciate. I've become more familiar with Moore thanks to her collaborations with Socalled in recent years, where she's this calm, enthralling presence in the midst of an occasionally chaotic and absurd stage show. But on Montebello the mayhem is gone, replaced by a soulful musical backdrop for Moore's mesmerizing voice, which has been sought after by the likes of Feist, Patrick Watson, and Chilly Gonzales for its rich tone and impact. As a songwriter and singer, Katie Moore simply shines on Montebello, an adventurous folk/country record that you gotta hear, I tells ya.
Are you a fan of Katie Moore? Any plans to pick up her new record or catch her on tour any time soon?
I have five CD copies of Montebello to give away to the first people on the blog to respond with correct
answers to questions I'll ask on the air throughout today's show (spelling, the great equalizer, counts). If this ends up being you (once!), please e-mail vish_khanna [at] cbcradio3.com
with "There's Always Room for Montebello" in the subject line, and your blog
moniker and shipping address in your message.
Old or new, Canadian or otherwise, what is YOUR album of the week?
