It’s all over but the crying…a fine Hank Williams Jr song, but also a way to describe the aftermath of any major awards’ event.
I’m going to spitball here and say that the love/hate sentiment for Arcade Fire’s win of the 2011 Polaris Music Prize win is about 60/40. Even those who probably liked The Suburbs still feel there was a certain lack of excitement to the decision. But then that’s what you get when you give a bunch of people the chance to makan “artistic” decisions on art.
I know that sounds strange, but ever since music, film and book awards started being given out based on people’s feelings, not sales, we’ve been stuck with this hand-wringing when the prize is handed out.So is there a better way?
Is it possible to give out an award without a lot of nasty comments and suspicion of the judge’s motives?
Let me know. I’ll see if they’re worthy enough to be considered.
