In 1970, Marvin Gaye was in crisis. He was frustrated with the way his career was going, feeling that he was part of creative assembly line. His duet partner, Tammi Terrell had just past away after a long battle with brain cancer.
He was feeling trapped in his marriage to the daughter of his Motown label boss. And fights with his father were constant. His one relief was football. Gaye was a big fan of the Detroit Lions, in particular.
Everything started to fall into place when Renaldo Benson of the Four Tops presented Gaye was a song called "What's Going On". It was a song about war. Gaye made a few changes, making it more personal. It became a song about his ongoing strife with his father and about his brother, who had just returned from Vietnam.
In the studio, Gaye enlisted two members of the Detroit Lions to sing backup. And Gaye not only sang, he played percussion on a cardboard box.
When Motown president Berry Gordy first heard the song, he rejected it saying it was too un-commercial. But he eventually changed his mind and it became a hit and eventually, a classic.
Before recording the song, a tormented Marvin Gaye said, "If I was arguing for peace, I knew I'd have to find peace in my heart". "What's Going On" turned Gaye's career around. But he never found the peace he sought with his father. Fourteen years later, their final dispute was settled when Marvin Sr. shot and killed the music legend.
It was Marvin Gaye's plea for peace - the song Rolling Stone magazine listed as the fourth greatest song of all time, "What's Going On" on Rear View Mirror.
