When MusicSoop pitched the Weld Theme "Songs That You Hate", it seemed rather harmless, sort of innocuous and potentially very fun!
However, it sparked a debate on whether or not we should use the word "hate", and/or whether or not we should be dissing indie bands' songs at all.
Not liking - even hating - a song is completely acceptable. Ever since I started at R3, I've often said that I hold the songwriting on our station up to the same standards as any song anywhere. I don't treat these songs like Fabergé eggs. Holding these bands up to a different standard that "mainstream" or "commercial" artists does nothing for them or indie music in general.
Especially given that we play a tonne of "mainstream" stuff, anyway!
Plus, I hold my own songwriting up to even finer scrutiny.
Feel the hate dislike coming off of Gibsonguitarist77, MikeV, rebbey, alsace lorraine, fresh ginger, canadajanes, loweeda, cathyort, markgage, EricR, darbarspecial, stevierayk, hotpants, StephRamsahai, vraets, kathyjean, hipped hop, Benoit from Ottawa, dawn.h, flannel tom, MoniSki, be free 2 live, Michael Wynn, garjoh, binsy, TheIceman, marie_curious, jojodillon and a couple picks via email from Vanessa Blackier and Maria Handley! (Diss?)honourable mentions go to Christine McAvoy, mattt, drock and daa1982.
Next week, let's go with a Weld Theme from TheIceman: "How about a theme for songs that are about days of the week. e.g. have Monday, Tuesday, Wenzdee etc.. in the title, song etc....?"
Comment below or email me (craig_norris@cbcradio3.com) with your song suggestions! Please, remember to put "Days" in the subject line!
