Hi I'm Amanda Putz the host of Bandwidth on CBC Radio One. Recently on said station I heard an interview with Whitehorse's Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. They're of course husband and wife as well as married through music.
He told the story of the song Emerald Isle. Luke had been training for his first marathon, and was going to run it while in England on tour with Blue Rodeo throughout Europe.
Luke's Mom--who is of Irish decent--celebrated her 60th birthday that year and the family all pitched in to send her to Ireland.
As if having his Mom at the finish line in England wasn't poignant enough, Melissa surprised him by flying halfway around the world from Australia, where she was on tour with Sarah McLachlan.
When he crossed the finish line, there was his beautiful wife and Mom waiting with open arms.
Tell me you don't get a lump in your throat just hearing that story! This song is awesome without knowing that, but it made it all the more powerful once I knew it.
