Like so many things in life, I first saw Halifax's Dog Day at Sappyfest. That festival has taught me so much about the world. I was blown away by their powerful set at George's Roadhouse, which validated all the hype about them to that point. They're a different band on Deformer, as husband Seth Smith and wife Nancy Urich are now making Dog Day run, as a duo. Fans who appreciate their gritty, power pop have nothing to fear, as it's still readily apparent on this relatively stripped down, infectious new record. Fans of Sonic Youth and louder Chad VanGaalen will find things to enjoy about Deformer, a fresh and dynamic effort by a really thoughtfully attentive rock 'n' roll band.
Are you a fan of Dog Day? Any plans to pick up their new record any time soon or see them live, like at their Halifax Pop Exlposion show with Old and Weird, Reversing Falls, the Skeletones Four, and Shotgun Jimmie at Gus' Pub in Halifax this Friday night?
I have five CD copies of Deformer to give away to the first people on the blog to respond with correct answers to questions I'll ask on the air throughout today's show (spelling, the great equalizer, counts). If this ends up being you (once!), please e-mail vish_khanna [at] cbcradio3.com with "Kim and Thurston Forever" in the subject line, and your blog moniker and shipping address in your message.
Old or new, Canadian or otherwise, what is YOUR album of the week?
