It’s Thursday, and you know what that means: Shotgunning with Lisa! Riding shotgun today is Vancouver singer/songwriter Jody Glenham. She sounds ever-so sexily tired after performing last night, so we’ll take it slow.
And while we meander the roadways, here’s a thought to make you ponder. Over at the music blog Spinner.ca I came across this headline: “2011: The Year Canadian Music Broke.”
Part of the evidence for this claim comes from this exciting fact: “In the first week of December, for the first time ever, four of the Top Five albums on the Billboard pop charts were by Canadians.”Up there in the top five (yes Adele was the other): Michael Buble, Justin Bieber, Drake and Nickelback.
Maybe we all though the highpoint was Arcade Fire winning the Grammy for Album of the Year, but no – it seems Canadian artists are unstoppable. As well as making the Billboard charts, there were a bunch of Top 10 nods to Feist, Austra and F**ed Up, The Weeknd.
Do you agree, was 2011 the year Canadian music broke?
My sentiment is that we’ve been pretty much killing it for a few years now. But maybe 2011 was our year. Let me know what you think…
