Jill Barber has made a name for herself recently with beautifully orchestrated albums that harken back to sultry songstresses of yore, but she got her start as a more traditional Canadian folk singer/songwriter. As In Perfect Time shows, she was more than adept at that genre as well.
To be sure, there's no shortage of acoustic guitar strumming people singing about heartbreak in this country, to a point where it all starts to feel vageuly disingenuous. With this song, Barber cuts through all the artifice to create something disarmingly beautiful, and the result is a song that's as timeless as any of the music she's made since.
