Today on Lanarama: Breaking the Language Barrier with International Music

I feel both equally lucky and unlucky that I was raised English speaking.  Lucky because so many people around the world speak English, which makes most travel easy and it is known to be hard to learn.  Unlucky, because it makes me lazy when it comes to learning language. My friends in Europe are tri-lingual at the least.

This can be similar in the world of music as well.  My Norwegian friends and I listen to a lot of the same English music, even Canadian independent acts, but their homegrown musical legends are acts I’m not aware of.  I can’t even pronounce them!  When they are familiar, it’s usually because they’ve released music in English.

After a quick iPod scan, the only non-english music to be found is an Edith Piaf collection, a few salsa mixes and 5 francophone albums. Maybe I’m not alone here, but surely can work on this.

Do you listen to music in another language?  What do you recommend?
