The American philosopher Henry David Thoreau was probably not speaking about music when he wrote these words:"If a man loses pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured, or far away. "
For our purposes today, those being discussing the art of the solo project, Thoreau is a very insightful music critic. Sometimes a band member just needs to break free and let those rhythms out.
Today Jack White announced he was putting out his debut solo release on his Third Man Records label. You can hear it tonight at midnight…oh, the drama. And this week John K. Samson of The Weakerthans released his latest solo effort: Provincial. It’s strange how fascinated we all are by these solo works. Many artists don’t belong to bands and work alone. So why is when a solo project is announced we become so fasinated?
