CBC Jazz continues its mission to compile a list of 10 essential Canadian jazz albums with a little help from friends in the jazz community.

Pianist, arranger and composer Michelle Grégoire is originally from Winnipeg, and now makes her home in Calgary. Her last recording, Diversity, was nominated for a 2011 Western Canadian Jazz Award.

We asked Grégoire to name three Canadian jazz albums that she thought should be considered for our list.

Kenny Wheeler, Music for Large and Small Ensemble (1990)

“Some of the most inspired writing, especially for jazz orchestra. Part II of the “Sweet Time Suite” is a masterpiece. This recording has influenced so many contemporary composers. Kenny Wheeler has been a major inspiration to so many Canadian musicians, due largely to his presence over the years at the Banff Centre where I first met him.”

Oscar Peterson Trio, Night Train (1963)

“An absolute classic! This recording made me love jazz. I can't get enough of it and I've been listening to it for almost 30 years. Every track is a masterpiece.”

Mike Murley, Extra Time (2004)

“It was tough to decide on the number three spot as there are so many current contributors to the world of Canadian Jazz. I picked this record mainly because it is rich in great writing and great performances with strong melody and musicality throughout the disc. Also, the presence of many of my favourite musicians (and people) didn't hurt – Dave Restivo on piano, Mike Murley on sax and my favourite rhythm section (they play on my recordings!) Jim Vivian on bass and Ted Warren on drums. I listened to this album for months when I first got it. It inspired me to put out the best record that I possibly could and I still love it!”

Special mention: Steve Amirault, Breath (2004)

“My go-to record when I need to hear something beautiful, inspired and meaningful.”

Our list continues to expand and we’d love to hear from you about the albums you’d recommend for our list of the essential Canadian jazz albums. Email jazz@cbc.ca or comment below.
