Montreal pop-rock band the Dears steered their way to Guelph for a Hillside Festival concert back in 2007. The Dears formed in 1995 and, while the band’s lineup has changed many times over the years, core members have remained, including founder Murray Lightburn and keyboardist Natalia Yanchak. The Dears’ music has been labeled as orchestral dark pop and their live shows as dramatic, going so far as being described as one review calls them “the sonic equivalent of seeing the face of God.”
In this Hillside concert you’ll hear some songs from the Dears’ most successful album, 2006’s Gang of Losers. On one of the band’s well-known tracks, “Whites Only Party,” main man Lightburn adds a few growls and extra guitar riffs.
Some other songs are soft and sweet, like “We Can Have It,” or one of my favourite Dears tracks: “You and I Are A Gang of Losers.” Of course, we can't have a concert without the rock, which you'll hear in the live version of “Whites Only Party.”
