Baseball season is in full swing, a rite of spring that even warms the hearts of baseball haters. No surprise that many of them can’t help but burst into song. In fact, a brief perusal of YouTube shows that pretty much every team has a fan-made unofficial anthem dedicated to them. Here we round up some of our favourites.
Baltimore Orioles
The birds are one of the worst teams in baseball, and have been for years. (Trust me, I cheer for them.) Yet they’ve managed to inspire numerous songs. Probably the best is the gritty, urban “Black and Orange,” but there’s something about the goofy backyard harmonies of a group of fans calling themselves Warning Track Power. Check out “Oh Oh Orioles.”
Montreal Expos
There are a couple of great things going on in this one. First of all, nostalgia for Canada’s first team. But note that the rap is built on a sample from the theme song for This Week In Baseball. Full points for this one.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs have spent the last few years trying to spend their way back into the playoffs. So it’s not surprising they had a ringer write a song about them. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, a lifelong Cubs fan, wrote “All the Way” about a team that hasn’t gone all the way since 1908.
Boston Red Sox
Red Sox Nation doesn’t really need to write its own songs. The team hired John Williams to write one. Still, some fans calling themselves the Gunz of the Rowdy wrote “4 in a Row” to tell the story of their amazing comeback in 2004, down 3-0 to the Yankees.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays are a little underrepresented in the fan video department (get on that, Canada). Perhaps “OK Blue Jays” has already said it all. But there still are some things out there, like this show tune cover dedicated to a pitcher.
