Should music be a competitive sport?

Another day, another music icon speaking out on something he hates about music today. This time it’s Paul Weller, and this time it’s tv talent shows.

The famed Brit pop artist called X Factor, American Idol, et al “Saturday night viewing for the masses.” Now I’m a pretty big fan of The Voice, and have been known to watch many tv talent shows so I guess that puts me in odds with Mr. Paul Weller. I do wonder if tv presenter and musician Jools Holland is right in saying that music is not a competition, but an art.

Interesting side note, the first British band to hit #1 on the Billboard charts was the new boy band One Direction. The band came third on X-Factor. And yes, Simon Cowell, the band’s manager, told Paul Weller to put that in his pipe and…
