It’s Album of the Week day, and today it’s all about celebrating the debut of Eight and a Half, a new musical creation from Justin Peroff of Broken Social Scene and Dave Hamelin and Liam O'Neil of The Stills.
The trio have been working on this moody, synth-based project for a while and even have a sophomore album already in the works. But first they have to get this debut out and play some shows and I would guess work on becoming as known for their new band as they were from their last.
During my research I came across the Wikipedia entry for the Frederico Fellini film of the same name 8 ½. The title refers to the number of films Fellini made, and explores: “the struggles involved in the creative process, both technical and personal, and the problems artists face when expected to deliver something personal and profound with intense public scrutiny, on a constricted schedule, while simultaneously having to deal with their own personal relationships. It is, in a larger sense, about finding true personal happiness in a difficult, fragmented life.”
If that doesn’t describe the pressures of this new band, I don’t know what does. I’ll find out from Justin if he identifies with the Italian filmmaker.
Wow, that’s deep. Feel free to share your deep thoughts and questions for Justin below.
