Friday the 13th is upon us. It’s a day that is synonymous with bad luck and scary movies. The music in horror movies is generally an orchestral score to play up the creepy vibe on screen. That is, until they get into the sequels. Then they put some rock music on the soundtrack. Here are some of the more notable rock songs from horror movies, starting with one from the Friday the 13th franchise.

Musically, Friday the 13th is probably best known for its instrumental theme song, but in 1986 the sixth installment of the franchise included three songs by Alice Cooper. In addition to “Hard Rock Summer” and “Teenage Frankenstein,” Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives featured “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask).”

While “Are You Ready for Freddy?” by the Fat Boys is probably the most well known song from the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, “Dream Warriors” by Dokken is the most rockin’. It was featured in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth featured a song simply titled “Hellraiser” by Motörhead, co-written by Ozzy Osbourne.

Rob Zombie seems to live in a world of nothing but rock and horror. When he directed his first feature film, House of 1000 Corpses, it was a no-brainer to also play its theme song.

The Ramones pop up in the 1989 film Pet Sematary. The band wrote the song of the same name for the movie, which was based on a Stephen King novel. King has a cameo as a minister in the movie, as well as the music video.
