Vacations are for suckers man! On my recent trip to Vancouver I tracked down wildcat music journalist and Evaporators front man, Nardwuar the Human Serviette and made him join the Breakfast Club. Without hesitation, he suggested we meet at fabled, venerable North Van institution, the Tomahawk Restaurant--the oldest restaurant in Vancouver--for a gigantic meal and important history lesson (mostly about Bryan Adams). And, thanks to Mint Records, I have five prize packs (featuring Nardwuar DVDs, Hot Panda Hot Sauce, the new Mint Zine, and Tomahawk paraphernalia) to offer the first bloggers who correctly answer questions I pose about today's show.
Nardwuar may be a frenetic, punk-pop, jack-in-the-box in the Evaporators, but he's best known as an intrepid, in your face rock journalist (on CITR 101.9 FM in Vancouver, WFMU, MuchMusic, and ChartAttack among other outlets), who's confronted everyone from Mikhail Gorbachev to Snoop Dogg (many times with the Schnoop confrontations) with obscure facts and artifacts that overwhelm his invariably grateful and freaked out subjects. Really, his interview conquests and fearless antics are too numerous and baffling to mention here, but, how ever divisive, it's safe to say that Nardwuar's a pillar of Vancouver's independent arts community. I'm a big fan of his work and in awe of his research and knowledge about music. Oh, and the degrees-of-separation thing; Nardwuar can take any topic for the ride of its life, veering crazily off-course before bringing it all back home with dizzying accuracy. Just listen to see what I mean.
Are you a fan of Nardwuar the Human Serviette? Have you heard/seen any of his interviews or watched his DVD collections?
I have five Mint Prize Packs (featuring NarDVDs, Hot Panda Hot Sauce, the new Mint Zine, and Tomahawk stuff like shirts, toques, head dresses, and more) to give away to the first listeners who can correctly answer the following questions about today's show on the blog:
1. What "vegetarian" food item does Nardwuar suggest we both eat at the Tomahawk?
2. After Kate Nash ate at the Tomahawk, what newspaper did she rave about the restaurant to?
3. Who does Nardwuar credit with tipping him off about Broken Social Scene?
4. What band tried to deliver one of their albums to Bryan Adams’ house with Nardwuar?
5. Before “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World,” what did Nardwuar used to say in his interview sign offs?
So, the answers to these questions will turn up on today's show. If you end up being the first person to post a winning answer on the blog, please e-mail vish_khanna [at] cbcradio3.com with "Everything I Nard, I Nard it For You" in the subject line, and your blog moniker and shipping address in your message.
