Levon Helm, drummer and singer for The Band, has died in New York after a battle with cancer. He was 71.
The news was confirmed by his former bandmate, Larry Campbell to The Times-Herald Record: "We lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family and his musicians have visited him. As sad as this was, it was very peaceful."
Helm's official Facebook page was updated with the following statement:
"Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon. He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul."
