Montreal's MUTEK festival has launched an ambitious Kickstarter campaign to raise $20,000 by May 16 to help fund its Virtual Festival Studio, a portable multimedia platform that will allow people around the world to experience many of the festival's events taking place from May 30 to June 3. With the recent launch of a new website, MUTEK has gone to considerable pains to archive some of the incredible performances, interviews and installations from the past decade, but with the virtual studio, users will now be able to experience the festival in real-time.
The expense of running an operation of this sort is daunting, especially for your average non-profit, which is why MUTEK has opted to raise funds through Kickstarter, a website that allows creative projects to source funding directly from the public. The funds would be used to cover the technical infrastructure for the live broadcasts, as well as staffing expenses. Like all Kickstarter campaigns, no funds would be collected and all donors would be reimbursed unless the monetary goal of $20,000 is not reached by the deadline.
