The mustachioed mask has reared its menacing face again, but this time the hacker group Anonymous isn’t taking down a major website – they are actually trying to give back. Well, sort of. The group is launching a music service called Anontune that will allow users to access any song they want for free by pulling them off third-party sites like YouTube, Tumblr and other sites that already host music.
The impetus for the service is to fight back against, as their video states, “a world in which your enjoyment of music is controlled and billed by the minute.”
The site is currently live now but is in a very rudimentary stage and, at this point, may not be the safest site to visit. As Wired reports, “The system relies on executing a Java applet. Unless you are extremely trusting or using VMware, you should think very carefully about running code on your machine.”
At this point the site isn’t going to revolutionize the music industry any time soon but, then again, it is only 20 per cent finished. One thing is for certain though, now that Anontune has launched, Anonymous will continue to be a thorn in the side of the major music industry.
