Adrenalin Rush is our series on music that quickens your pulse and gives you goosebumps. Montreal conductor and baroque flutist Matthias Maute gets his adrenalin rush from J. S. Bach, specifically the final chorus from the Gloria of the Mass in B minor:

“It comes after a solo aria, so the chorus starts abruptly. Bach writes music that rushes and races both the orchestra and the choir through an incredibly adventurous trip. The way the piece is put together, it has an accumulation of energy that’s unique. The speed and motion that goes through the music is very energizing. When you listen you just can’t believe it; it’s an experience that goes way beyond daily life!”

Maute plays baroque flute in a performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor in Montreal on April 22, featuring the choir Musica Orbium under the direction of Patrick Wedd.

Watch the final chorus of the Gloria from the Mass in B minor by Bach, performed in St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany. This is the church where Bach was music director from 1723 until his death in 1750.
