CBC Music is proud to present a series of videos recorded at the 30th anniversary gala concert of the Aldeburgh Connection in Toronto. The Aldeburgh Connection was founded by pianists Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata. They consider Benjamin Britten the “signature” composer of the Aldeburgh Connection because the two pianists met at a summer school run by Britten and his partner, the late Peter Pears. The school was part of the Aldeburgh Festival in England.
This sonnet is from Britten's Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, the first of many song cycles that he wrote for Pears' distinctive tenor voice.
Here, Colin Ainsworth explains why he enjoys singing Britten's music so much.
