CBC Music asked Leslie McCue, general manager of Canada’s oldest indigenous arts service organization located in Toronto, to tell us about their monthly event called The RED Revue. This is what McCue had to say about it.
The Association for Native Development in the Performing and Visual Arts hosts a monthly event called The RED Revue. It finds its inspiration in events that uncover the poetic aspect of life, led by experimentation on stage. It also follows the diversity of artistic practice of vaudeville where theatre, music, literature, comedy, performance art, poetry and film share the stage. Indigenous ideas of building community around creativity and creating avenues for transforming culture are what drive The RED Revue. It takes place on the fourth Friday of every month with a main musical act and an open arts mic.
This month we are featuring Ecuadorian singer-songwriter Dave West. His music highlights Ecuadorian rhythms: Afro, native and mestizo fused in a contemporary style. The association works with indigenous artists/creators from all over the world and we have chosen to feature West this month. His unique finger stylings and double-sided guitar are sure to astound, and echo with you long after this night!
The RED Revue showcases the diversity of indigenous music with artists such as Leah Flanagan, Pure Fe, Arthur Renwick, Cris Derksen, Cheri Maracle, Sean Conway, the Johnnys, Kinnie Starr, Jacques and the Shakey Boys, the Pappy Johns Band, Brock Stonefish, Samantha Crain and Nick Ferrio.
The RED Revue this month takes place April 27 at The Sister, 1554 Queen St. West, 9:30 p.m.
The Association for Native Development in the Performing and Visual Arts supports indigenous artists/creators and producers that are working in any discipline through networking, promotion, workshops, training and partnerships. We also work for increased access to the arts sector for artists through policy development and advocacy. Our publications, arts resource library, Indigenous Arts Network online and ongoing research increase the knowledge of indigenous arts and artists.
