Maestro William Eddins is taking the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra to Carnegie Hall. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, which the Edmonton Symphony has been doing for 60 years. Eddins has been the Music Director since 2005, and recently he entered the orchestra in a competition to perform at Carnegie Hall during its annual Spring for Music Festival. His innovative program featuring composers and musicians associated with Edmonton resulted in an invitation to play at Carnegie Hall on May 8.
William Eddins grew up in Buffalo, New York. One day his parents brought home a grand piano they found at a yard sale, and young Eddins was hooked on music. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music at the age of 18, one of the school's youngest graduates ever. Prior to his arrival in Edmonton, Eddins held posts in the United States and Europe, and worked as an assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera.
As host of This Is My Music this week Eddins reveals that occasionally he sneaks into the Winspear Centre just to play the organ for his own amusement. William Eddins hosts This Is My Music on Saturday, April 28 on CBC Radio 2, 10:05 a.m. to noon ET, 11:05 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. AT.
