These outstanding players – Gwen Hoebig and Karl Stobbe, violins; Daniel Scholz, voila; Yuri Hooker, cello and David Moroz, piano – are joined by a familiar musical friend, the accomplished cellist Desmond Hoebig.

Three outstanding performers explore solo, duet and trio repertoire for keyboard, with works by Schubert, Messiaen, Scarlatti and Alebeniz on the program. Plus, you’ll hear the world premiere of Peter Allen’s Piano Work for Six Hands. Let’s just hope they don’t have to all share the same bench.

Hot Ticket #3: Heavy competition in Montreal

Who: Vocal finalists in the Montreal International Music Competition
What: The grand orchestral round with l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal led by Alain Trudel.
When:
Tues., June 5 and Wed., June 6 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 pm
Where: Maison Symphonique, Montreal

Who will be there: Competition fanatics and scouters of young talent.

Why you should go: To hear young singers from around the world strut their stuff. The Montreal International Music Competition, this year marking its 10th anniversary, has a great track record for spotting the next generation of star performers. The competition rotates through piano, violin and voice every three years and this year it’s open to vocalists. Not surprisingly, Canadian singers have done particularly well in past years. Soprano Measha Brueggergosman won in 2002 and has gone on to a spectacular career, while Marianne Fiset, who took top prize in 2007, is singing up a storm in Europe. This week you’ll have a chance to hear some of the world’s best young artists competing for the grand prize of $30,000 and career development assistance worth $20,000.

Watch soprano Marianne Fiset, first prize winner in 2007, sing Lauretta's aria from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi:
