Today on the show I’m exploring "Vinyl Culture" with Martin and Nick Koppel who run the oldest record store in Toronto, Kops records.
This year they’ve teamed up with NXNE on Saturday to stage a record show.
The Kops lads are trying to shake of the stereotype of record shows as dusty mausoleum-like rooms, full of people silently flipping through endless crates of disks.
So they’ve drummed up a posse of DJ’s to provide a soundtrack including a set by Brendan Canning of Cookie Duster & Broken Social Scene. They have a kids' craft table so children can glue googly eyes and glitter on old 45s. That should liven the place up!
They’ve also collected a horde of vinyl artifacts from every age, from the wax cylinders of the late eighteen hundreds, to hip pocket records designed by the ford motor company for in-car use. Ford forgot about the bumps in the road which is why cars no longer have turntables #badidea
Martin will tell the story behind the most expensive record he ever sold which cost thirty five thousand dollars and sounded like this…
Help us celebrate "Vinyl Culture" and share your thought on the black slabs of wax that captured many a music fan's heart.
Do you still love vinyl?
