Crystal Shawanda is one of Canada’s best-known country singers. Not only was she the Canadian female country singer of the year in 2009, Shawanda has toured with Reba McEntire and even played Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
Shawanda may now be living the dream in Nashville, but her roots are on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, where she was born and raised. And, when she made her way to Nashville, Shawanda hit her fair share of challenges before enjoying her current success, including an executive who said there was no room for First Nations musicians in country music.
What did Shawanda have to say to that? Click below to hear part of our chat, which aired on Bandwidth on June 23.
Shawanda has tour dates coming up across Canada this summer – check out her website for a full listing.
