For those of us who spend time on the music blogs, nothing thrills more than a fine new music video, unless it comes with that dreaded “NSFW” (Not Safe For Work) tag. Not that it really stops you (read: us), however. You (we) just need to find a safe moment before clicking play.
Thing is, most times you’ll be caught. How many of you (us) watched the new Flaming Lips video featuring Erykah Badu? Really, if a co-worker or the boss man came by, no one really judges – it’s all sexy and cool and that’s who you want to be anyway.
But if music bloggers really wanted to be helpful they’d add the NSFW tag to videos that do nothing to add to your cool factor. Case in point:
The tear-jerker video
Glen Campbell, “A Better Place.”
The last video from country singer Glen Campbell, who is about to disappear into the sad ravages of Alzheimer’s disease. I clicked on the video, then proceeded to have a good cry at my desk. Weeping is a decidedly not cool thing to do at work.
The extremely dated ’90s video
Ace of Base, “Beautiful Life.”
I know, I know, we all keep hearing how great the ’90s were, and the music was just so great. This is not the song to show how retro you are.
Runner-up: Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.”
The totally age-inappropriate video
One Direction, “One Thing.”
It’s true, all the young girls are into this latest boy band. If you have a job, you’re too old for this one.
The tortured breakup song video
Phil Collins, “In the Air Tonight.”
Yes, breakups are hard. But listening to this song over and over and over will not help you. And anyone who sees you watching this will know what happened.
Runner-up: Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.”
The dance inducing video:
Beyonce, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”
This is impossible to listen to without dancing in your chair. That is an awkward look.
Runner-up: Michael Jackson’s first moonwalk on Motown. You’ll still never pull this one off.
