For the next 10 weeks on CBC Music, we're featuring one album per week from this year's Polaris Music Prize short list. We want to give you the chance to appreciate each of the shortlisted albums, and maybe play the role of the juror. Hope in Dirty City
This is the third studio album from Edmonton's two-term poet laureate, Roland Pemberton. His first two studio records, 2006's Breaking Kayfabe and 2008's Afterparty Babies, were both nominated for the Polaris Prize in previous years. “[Hope in Dirt City] features so many different styles of music, I didn’t know how people were going to respond to it,” Pemberton told CBC Music, in regard to the album's blend of psychedelic soul, old school rap, and intelligent dance music sounds. “Turns out, people are feeling it, and that makes me really happy.”
What do you think of Hope in Dirt City? Should it win the Polaris Prize this year? Let us know in the comments.
