In celebration of CBC Music’s new Killer Covers stream, we’re pitting some of the most famous cover versions against the originals. Once a day for two weeks we'll post an original song and its cover, and you can vote for which version you prefer.
Today, “Lovers in a Dangerous Time.”
“Lovers in a Dangerous Time” is a classic Canadian hit, originally written and performed by Bruce Cockburn. It’s the opening track of his 1984 album, Stealing Fire, and became one of his signature songs. In 2005, CBC Radio One’s 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version ranked the song 11th on its list of the greatest Canadian songs ever, just edging out Stompin’ Tom’s “The Hockey Song.”
Here is Cockburn's original:
In 1991, Barenaked Ladies recorded a cover of the song for a Cockburn tribute album called Kick at the Darkness. The Toronto band’s version helped skyrocket Barenaked Ladies to success, as it became their first ever radio hit and their first music video. The black-and-white video won the band two MuchMusic Video Awards in 1992.
Check back Monday for another cover song matchup.
