I was checking out the (characteristically terrific) line up for the Live At Squamish Festival when I noticed something that piqued my interest - "A Motown Tribute To Nickelback". Obviously I did some quick clicking, and I'm delighted to report that it is indeed what it sounds like - a lovingly rendered, perfectly realized rendition of the oft-maligned rock bands hit How You Remind Me in the style of Motown. It's awesome.
Cover bands are nothing new, but it takes a special kind of musician to take a band's music and completely reinvent it. Whether it's a simple matter of gender reversal, a transformation into ultimate cheese, or even a bluegrass medley of Radiohead songs (yup), there's something about the recontextualization of music that really appeals to me. For example, I would not consider myself to be a Nickelback fan. But I LOVE the motown rendition of How You Remind Me. So what does that say about me?
And how about you - if you could hear a band's catalogue reimagined in any way, what would it be? And feel free to share some of your favourite reimaginings as well!
