We all know Jarvis Church from his days with the hard-rocking R&B group the Philosopher Kings, and more recently as a solo love song crooner. Church is an incredible talent with a soulful voice.

His latest project, Jarvis Church and the Soul Station, has Church and his crack band of soul musicians taking a look back, way back, before the days of the Philosopher Kings. Soul Station is in the midst of releasing a series of recordings that pay homage to the soul singers that influenced Church. The first in that series features the music of Sam Cooke.

CBC Music caught up with Jarvis Church and the Soul Station to record them at the Jackson-Triggs amphitheatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Soul Station performed a 1960s soul-style revue of all the great Cooke songs.

But the surprising part of the night came when Church sang two of his own songs, “Do It Better” and “She Keeps Me Up All Night.” While these songs were written in 2012, you would never know it. They sound like they are lost B-sides by Cooke himself. Incredible!
