Choral Concert: the German Romantics edition

It’s all about German romanticism this week on Choral Concert.

Host Peter Togni will lead us into the deep, emotional waters of the 19th century, where we will wallow in the creative tension between passion and intellect. This was the great Romantic period of the German-speaking masters, where the ideal was to create a new synthesis between art, philosophy and science.

It’s hard to say whether or not they were successful at this synthesis, and perhaps that type of discussion is better left to experienced historians, but I think we can all agree that some extraordinary music came out of Germany and Austria during the Romantic period.

Brahms, Schubert, Rheinberger and Mendelssohn all created profound masterworks during the 19th century, many of them choral.

This Sunday you will hear all of these composers and more performed by the Vancouver Cantata Singers, the West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir, the Corydon Singers and the Monteverdi Choir.

Choral Concert, the German Romantics edition. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. (9:30 - 11:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2.
