Every week on The Incident, I uncover a secret about the musicians you love. It could be a story from the road, a tale from inside the recording studio or just one of the crazy things that happens to a working musician.
Somebody once asked a long time circus employee why he didn’t tire of shoveling elephant dung night after night. He simply replied, “What, and quit show business?!”
It is amazing what we can convince ourselves to deal with when we follow our dreams.
Singer Rose Cousins has been following her dream of being a working musician for years. The east coaster was born in P.E.I. and has spent much of her career in Halifax. She has played every kind of venue, from theatres and clubs, to intimate house concerts.
When working the house concert circuit, the pros are simple. Very little overhead, interesting people, and free room and board. Tickets are usually quite reasonable for attendees, so everyone wins.
The cons are as colourful as the people who put on such an event.
That brings us to the Rose Cousins incident. One tiny house, an eccentric female host, two of her lovers, and a bad case of gas.
