In celebration of CBC Music’s new Killer Covers stream, we’re pitting some of the most famous cover versions against the originals. Once a day for two weeks we'll post an original song and its cover, and you can vote for which version you prefer.
Today, “All Along the Watchtower.”
Bob Dylan released “All Along the Watchtower” in 1967, and it features a traditional late-’60s Dylan arrangement, including guitar, harmonica and that signature voice.
Jimi Hendrix’s cover was released just six months after Dylan’s and completely changed the feel of the song. Its iconic opening evokes the turmoil of the time and always reminds me of my days in Vietnam (I went to a resort in 2001).
Check back tomorrow for another cover song matchup.
