It's our second week with Maintenance by Montreal’s Rob Benvie and I hope those of you who have started reading it are enjoying it thus far. A sharp writer, Benvie is likely best known for playing in bands like the Dears, Camouflage Nights, Tigre Benvie and, of course, Thrush Hermit. This week I'm giving copies of the book away on Twitter. Read on for instructions.
I'm not too far into the book yet but am enthralled enough by the characters and their behaviour to want to learn more. So far, they all seem to be in their own dark funks, and I want to see how they negotiate their way out of this rich malaise. Maybe it's the Y2K paranoia they're enduring in the summer of 1999, but a nihilsitic sense of dread permeates the early action.
Actually, Benvie himself posted on last week's blog about Maintenance. "Hope those of you who are reading the book are enjoying it. It might be sort of bleak, but I hope there are some laffs along the way. Maintain!'" Seems like good advice.
