Robert Birch, who played bass in Elton John’s band, was found dead Wednesday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, TMZ reports. The 56-year-old's body was found near his home. No suicide note was found, and authorities don’t suspect drug use.
John released a statement on his website. “I am devastated and shocked at the loss of my friend and fellow musician, Bob Birch.... I cannot find the words to describe this tragic death, and how much I loved him.” John also called Birch “one of the greatest musicians I have ever worked with.”
Birch had been a member of John’s band for 20 years. He also performed and recorded with such artists as Bryan Adams, Eric Clapton, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Billy Joel, Cher and Tina Turner.
