Real Cool Time with Louise Burns in China (kinda)

Tour food is a sub genre in itself. All bands have been through their humble grassroot beginnings, living off peanut butter, white bread and beer. If they're lucky, they graduate to Taco Bell and sometimes an entire pizza and cheap bottle of wine. But foreign touring can be even more difficult.

In China, being a vegetarian is a bit hard. Last time I travelled here I went to Zhang Bei, a few hours North of Beijing. Being so remote, they had to bring food in everyday from a nearby town. The first day I was there was a holiday, so I ate nothing but steamed buns resembling cherub bottoms and beer for 2 days. I felt pretty gross, but the alternative was horse meat...

In Japan, food is expensive but a little safer. I'm a Vacouverite at heart and have lived off sushi for the past five year, so I can recognize a safe and easy yam roll (so Western...) from a mile away. Not to say I haven't been adventurous in my eating choices, but you know, being vegetarian can be pretty limiting. More room for sake.

One man who knows a thing or two about travelling would be Alex Zhang Hung-tai, aka Dirty Beaches. Just follow his instagram- this man has been everywhere.

Check out his European tour food diary for Vice's Noisey here.

On today's show I'll dish out a few tips for touring musicians (BYOT, "ferry hacking" and pocket sized wine bottles).

What are your favourite tour/travel food stories/tips? Help a sista out. By now, I will have consumed 100 Tsingtao beers and approximately 0 vegetables.
