Tastes of the Tour Bus: road-tested restos from Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers

What's the next most important thing to performing when a band is on tour? Eating, of course! Every band that has hit the cold roads of Canada have their favourite restos, diners, coffee shops and steakhouses. Tastes of the Tour Bus features these road-tested recommendations.

Today, Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers.

The band's recent successes have kept them on the road over the last year supporting their new album New Wild Everywhere. GLS have their own following but have also opened for acts like Blue Rodeo, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, bringing their folk-rock sound to an even bigger audience.

Dekker is a vegetarian, so his take on the Tastes from the Tour Bus are pretty specific.

Toronto (hometown)

Shangri La

“Some people may not know that Toronto has a huge Tibetan community, and there are tons of great Tibetan restaurants in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto. There is one I particularly that is one that I totally trust.... . It’s called Shangri La, it’s on Queen Street West in Parkdale.

"There’s a Tibetan specialty called momos and these are steamed dumplings. You can get these really great vegetable [momos], I tend to be vegetarian and I eat fish once and awhile, but I really try to hunt down good veggie stuff and these guys just really do it right. It’s my Shangri La.”

Guelph

The Cornerstone

Since he's a vegetarian and a spiritual guy, I wanted to know how Dekker felt about flavor.

"No I love it, I love all kinds of flavors, all kinds of foods from around the world. Cornerstone here in Guelph did a wonderful job on brunch today. Especially for the vegan options."

Montreal

Aux Vivres

My favorite is actually a place on St. Laurent and it's called Aux Vivres. They do amazing vegetarian and vegan stuff. They do desserts and cookies and stuff to go too.

Alberta

"You don't have to look too hard actually, Calgary, Edmonton. There's usually one diner in town that is more conscious, has some vegetarian or organic meats."

Wakefield, Que.

Chez Eric

"I should mention probably one of my most favorite places in my most favorite cities. It's in Wakefield, Quebec which is in the Gatineau hills. There's a wonderful venue there called The Black Sheep Inn. Just within walking distance roughly, there's a little restaurant called Chez Eric. It's a beautiful little town, it's right on the Gatineau River, we always have good shows at the Black Sheep Inn. We always go to eat at Chez Eric, and they never let us down. They just have amazing specials and amazing dishes, lots of nice local ingredients, vegetarian options, great Quebec cheeses too. Probably one of my favorite restaurants in Canada."

New Orleans

"My favorite foods that I've had in the US generally spring from the New Orleans area. Louisiana food, Cajun food, all those great spices. It's a really wonderful thing."

St. John's, Nfld.

Rocket Bakery

"Rocket Bakery, I think they just opened a year ago, or maybe a couple of years ago now. Best coffee in St. John's in my opinion, and awesome friendly staff, and lot's of healthy stuff. Vegetarian sandwiches, meat sandwiches, granola, all kinds of good breakfasts and good food."

Yellowknife

Bullock's Bistro

"Anyone who's been in Yellowknife has probably come across this place. Basically whatever they catch out in the (Great Slave) lake, the fisherman go out in the morning and catch a bunch of fish. Whatever they catch, that's what's on the menu in the afternoon and the evening. What you are getting is fish pulled straight from the lake, fresh as you can get it, and then on the table."
