In the first hour of this week’s Saturday Night Blues, we’ll play tracks from our classic live album of the month, Powder Blues Band: Live At Montreux, recorded in 1983 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
This was recorded at the height of the Powder Blues Band’s commercial success, and showcases some of the group’s hits, like “Doin’ It Right” and “Hear that Guitar Ring.”
In the second hour, host Holger Petersen talks to former member of the Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley. In the 1960s, the phrase “blue-eyed soul” was coined to describe the music of the Righteous Brothers. Over the decades, Medley, along with his musical partner Bobby Hatfield, charte massive hits like “Little Latin Lupe Lu,” “My Baby” and classics like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and “Unchained Melody.” Medley talks about how the blues was influential in his musical growth.
In 1949, Memphis Slim wrote and recorded a song called “Nobody Loves Me.” In 1950, Lowell Fulson adapted that song, renamed it and recorded is as “Every Day I Have the Blues.” B.B. King then took hold of Fulson’s version and has been playing it ever since. On the SNB cover of the week, we will play the Fulson and King songs back to back.
Saturday Night Blues airs Saturdays on CBC Radio 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on CBC Radio One from 9 to 11 p.m. Past shows can be heard by clicking the audio tab on the Saturday Night Blues page.
