CBC Music has enlisted Jian Ghomeshi, host of Q on CBC Radio 1, to create a new music stream. The genre of the stream holds a special significance for Ghomeshi.
“In specific regard to my coming of age,” he says, “new wave played a pivotal role in my tween and early teen years, and so it has a special place in my heart. More specifically, I desperately thought being new wave was cool and tried to emulate my favourite new wave heroes as a kid, and failed miserably in most cases.”
Starting on Sept. 12, CBC Music presents Jian’s New Wave, a stream of post-punk classics spanning the late 1970s to present day.
Later this month, Ghomeshi will release his first book, 1982, focused on his musical coming of age.
“The book is about being 14 and wanting to be Bowie and feeling that validation would come if I could just get the new wave thing right. It’s stories based on maybe the most momentous year of my attempts to be new wave, and that was 1982.”
While every song on the stream is handpicked from Ghomeshi’s collection, he chose a particular song to be played first. We’re not going to spoil it for you, but follow him on Twitter for some hints, and check out the launch of Jian’s New Wave on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at noon ET (9 a.m. PT).
