This week on Choral Concert, host Peter Togni will travel around the world to bring us the best new choral releases for the fall.
You’ll hear brand new music from Canadian groups like Concerto Della Donna and the Elora Festival Singers, as well as groups from as far away as Christchurch, New Zealand. But our centerpiece is a beautiful and unique project from Montreal’s Les Voix Baroques with the unusual and somewhat melancholy title O Poore Distracted World!
The CD focuses on English music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Back then, melancholy was the prevailing mood and writers and composers like Shakespeare, Dowland and Purcell indulged heavily in the noble discontentment of the time.
This Sunday we'll present two poignant songs by some of the lesser known British composers of the time found on this wonderful disc: Martin Peerson and Robert Ramsey.
Choral Concert, the “melancholy but beautiful” edition. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. (9:30 - 11:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2.
