Over the weekend, the remarkable jazz trio São Paulo Underground played a 2:30 a.m. set for the Nuit Blanche segment of the Guelph Jazz Festival. The late Saturday/early Sunday show was mind-blowing, with Rob Mazurek (cornet, electronics, vox) Mauricio Takara (percussion), and birthday boy Guilherme “G-Ball” Granado (keys, loops, samples, electronics) living up to their rep as one of the most electrifying ensembles in the world today.

SPU, whose most recent release is the excellent Três Cabeças Loucuras, will appear at Casa Del Polopo in Montreal on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

In the video interview below, we learn about cupcakes, why the musicians love playing Guelph, how Brazilian shows tend to start late, splitting time living in Chicago and Brazil, strange happenings on tour, lively church murals, and their plans to make a new record in Chicago very soon.
