In the first hour of this week’s Saturday Night Blues, Vancouver-based boogie piano player Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne chats with host Holger Petersen. Wayne also gives our piano a workout as he plays some live acoustic blues in the SNB studio.
Wayne played all over the United States as he grew up, but his career really took off when he reached the San Francisco Bay area. Over the years, he has brought his Fats Domino- and Johnnie Johnson-influenced style to work with acts like Sly and the Family Stone, the Doobie Brothers, Delaney and Bonnie and Billy Preston.
In hour two, we sample a classic live album. This week it’s The Johnny Otis Show: Live at Monterey, recorded in 1970. Johnny Otis was a bandleader, composer, minister, disc jockey, painter, author and chef. Among his major claims to fame was the discovery of a young singer named Etta James.
Bluesline requests, the Saturday Night Blues cover of the week and the latest releases in blues round out the show.
Saturday Night Blues airs Saturdays on CBC Radio 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on CBC Radio One from 9 to 11 p.m.
