Chilly Gonzales, the self-proclaimed musical genius whose post-modern piano stylings defy categorization, has just released a new album, Solo Piano II, on the Arts & Crafts label.
Gonzales has made no secret of the fact that classical music has been central to his style, which is often compared to that of French composer Eric Satie. It turns out Glenn Gould, who would have turned 80 on Sept. 25, has also been an influence.
On a recent Toronto visit, Gonzales took an 80th-birthday time out with Gould, in effigy, and sat down to noodle on the late piano genius's piano:
