Every month, CBC Radio 3, Aux TV and Exclaim! pick an emerging Canadian musician or band that you should know more about. And right now, you need to check out electro-pop duo Purity Ring.

Their sound is ethereal and electronic, and if you have heard their music it may come as a surprise that one of Purity Ring's biggest influences is southern hip-hop. But listen closely and it's there – the beats, the rhythms, even some of the melodies.

I asked the band's composer, Corin Roddick, to pick five tracks he's listening to right now that influence his sound – or he just really digs.

Check these out, then have a re-listen to Purity Ring.

1. Alicia Keys, "Unthinkable."

This may seem to be an incongruous pick, but it's the vocal sound that Roddick really likes: "This track has amazing production, vocal melody and vocal delivery."

2. Big Boi, "Hustle Blood (feat. Jamie Foxx)."

3. Kuedo, "Truth Flood."

No surprise here, as there is a direct and obvious correlation between Kuedo and Purity Ring's sound.

4. Major Lazer, "Get Free (feat. Amber from Dirty Projectors)."

5. 2 Chainz, "Yuck (feat. Lil Wayne)."

Asked why Roddick picked this track, he simply said: "It's a great jam."
