Glenn Gould has given music lovers plenty to think about in the 80 years since his birth. We know him as a multidisciplinary artist whose activities began at the piano and branched out from there. This week, Tempo looks at Gould in his own words, through five quotations that show five different sides of the man who continues to inspire and enthrall us. Today, side three.
“Behind every silver lining there is a cloud.” – Glenn Gould
Gould was quirky. You know that, right?
Not one for bright colours, Gould’s wardrobe consisted of 50 shades of tweed and seemed oblivious to the outside weather. But his biggest quirk – perhaps obsession – was the search for a perfect piano. The battered and forgotten Steinway CD 318 was his answer.
Jan Lisiecki unveils Glenn Gould’s favourite piano earlier this year at its new home in the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
