Welcome to Shift, where Tom Allen takes you on a daily musical journey from the stalwarts of Classical music to the cutting edge of Contemporary tunes. Join us here on CBC music for a round-up of the stories of the day, some videos of music (or maybe just videos interesting to music fans) and a place to speak your voice.
Monday October 8th
The story from last week of the bullied American newscaster, and her retort, are lighting up the internet. Bullying of this variety is no new thing, but take a look for reference:
Anna Maria Strada dealt with her fair share of bullying in her time. She began her career in Italy, but moved to London to sing for Georg Frederic Handel. Her singing voice was incredible, but some of her facial movements on stage looked bizarre. The cruel audience in London gave her the nickname "The Pig". Instead of running from their jeers, she stayed in London for 8 years. By the end of her years there, she'd sung herself into favour.
We've also got plenty of Thanksgiving tunes. The Rosenberg Trio's "Songe D'Automne" welcomes the changing colour of the leaves. But we've also got food on the mind. The Brothers Creeggan will delight with their upbeat number, "John's in the Fridge". Since turkey is on the menu, we'll play "Chicken Strut" for those poultry that are off the hook this weekend. And the Beatles and K.D. Lang have your desert covered with "Savoy Truffle" and "Sugar Buzz" respectively. And if that's not enough?
Here's William Devaughn's "Be Thankful for What You Got".
And we've dusted off an old classic for you. Well, relatively speaking. Here's a live video for the Wooden Sky's "Late King Henry". The song grew and evolved by the time their record released, but the energy in this packed room gives the tune a whole different feel. Let us know what you think of their venue!
