Today on Appetite for Distraction: Staged Antics

It’s Lisa Christiansen, the fill-in gunslinger today. And since many of you probably took in a concert or two over the weekend, I’m here to collect your tales.

Last night I headed out to the PNE Forum to see the French-pop band Phoenix. They’ve been here many times before, and always in increasingly bigger venues. Last night was probably their biggest local show yet.

I found a seat/part of a bleacher just off to the right of the stage and had a pretty good view of things. Bathed in fog and dramatic lighting, the band came out and launched right into “Lisztomania” from their latest release and all seemed great. Lead singer Thomas Mars got off stage and waded into the crowd below and I thought “wow, just like a rock band.”

And then, just like that, he was laying on his back on the stage. The band began playing a series of instrumental tracks, and he just continued to stay flat. I was more than confused, I thought maybe he was ill or jet lagged or something awful. But pretty soon he was back at it.

Apparently this is de rigueur, according to people who have seen Phoenix before. Mars disappears for a bit, and then magically appears.

Now this is hardly the craziest thing I’ve seen at a concert, but it got me to thinking:

WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING YOU’VE SEEN A BAND DO ON STAGE?

Share your stories on the blog today, and then we’ll ask the Winnipeg, Manitoba band Boats about their stage antics.
